Today was very mellow. On the one hand, I'm glad that people aren't catching on fire, etc. On the other hand, it makes for a boring news day. Our live shot was in Imperial Beach. In one of my pictures, you can see Mexico in the background. We were reporting on Bikeway Village which is a new rest stop that will start going up tomorrow. It will feature stations to refill water bottles, cafes, and even a hostel. Since there wasn't really much to see, Enrique didn't have to get B roll. Liz did a live interview with a man who regularly travels the 27 mile route. He told us that the only rest stop on the trail is in Coronado.
Our VOSOT was on the boat show that took place in Harbor Island. When we first got there, a lady, who is most likely the public relations representative, handed Liz a list of facts about the boat show. At first, I thought, "Wow how convenient! That means less digging for us." Later, I realized that she was trying to advertise the boat show as much as she can. I'm not really sure how I'm supposed to feel about this. Of course, it's her job to promote this, but I can see how it could be annoying to the crew.
For my project today, Liz had me write a mock script. After I finished, she went over it with me. I just finished what I hope is my final draft. I can officially cross "news writer" off of the list of jobs in my future. It takes a lot more thought to put together five sentences, give or take, than I thought. It has to be informative, succinct, and conversational. A good piece of advice that Liz gave me was that I should pretend that I am talking to someone directly as opposed to a camera.
My piece from last night aired a second time this morning.
